The Royal Institution

This was an experimental gas making plant set up in a new, and important, scientific research institute at a time when both Humphrey Davy and Michael Faraday were on the staff.

William Brande was a lecturer in Chemistry at the Royal Institution and clearly would have needed this apparatus as part of his research role. The existence of this plant at the Institution clearly puts research into gas for lighting at the centre of the scientific world at a time when both Davy and Faraday were active there.
